History and Highlights of the NYAHSA Art Show

The annual, traveling NYAHSA Art Exhibit is a collection of the works of residents, registrants, staff and volunteers affiliated with NYAHSA and the ADHCC (Adult Day Health Care Council).

The exhibit was originally presented in collaboration with the alliance of New York State Arts Councils from 1991 – 1996; in 1992, NYAHSA also paired with the NEW England Association of Homes for the Aging for a presentation at the AAHSA Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. During these early years, the exhibit had limited opportunities to travel but several popular media personalities participated as guest hosts when the exhibit was displayed at the Empire State Plaza.

In 1997, NYASHA Services, Inc., a subsidiary of NYAHSA that explores programs that integrate the need and delivery of appropriate services to NYAHSA members by arrangements with selected vendors, assumed sole sponsorship of the exhibit enabling NYAHSA to become the sole presenter of this annual event.

Over time the number of exhibit locations has grown from just a few to its current 10 visits to NYAHSA and ADHCC members.  In 2007, 200 different artists from facilities throughout the state submitted more than 200 pieces. The exhibit begins in the Capital Region and visits the Western, Rochester, Southern Tier, Central, Northern and Hudson Valley regions concluding in the Long Island area.

Professional artists serve as jurists and select the works for the show from two categories, Resident/Client or Staff/Volunteer. Seventy pieces of artwork are selected for the traveling show and those that are not may be selected by a NYAHSA employee for display in there NYAHSA office.

Over the course of 17 shows, the program has received well over 4,000 art works of all media.

Contributing artists are residents of NYAHSA’s member facilities, registrants of ADHCCs member programs and staff and volunteers of both. They come from many different places and many different backgrounds. Some are trained artists, others are not, but they all share the common bond of artistic expression.
