Caring Communication: Cooperative Communication at the End of Life Manual
This manual, which is now available from the Foundation for Long Term Care, is designed to help those who provide care to nursing home residents at the end of life to communicate better with family members.
Written by Rhoda Meador and Carol Hegeman, “Caring Communication: Cooperative Communication at the End of Life” is a train-the-trainer manual designed to assist nursing home staff and train others in this sensitive area.
“Dying residents in a nursing home need and deserve staff specially trained in reducing physical and emotional pain and suffering at the end of life,” said Hegeman, who is d irector of research for the Foundation for Long Term Care (FLTC) . “However, staff and family members of the dying resident also deserve and need specialized attention at this trying time.” This manual addresses these needs.
This specialized publication includes training content, interactive activities and case studies to make it easier for trainees to relate to the material. The manual also includes step-by-step instructions on how to prepare for training, as well as camera-ready materials that facilities can convert into overheads and handouts. Published in a loose-leaf format, the manual can easily accommodate material particular to the needs of each specific nursing home.
Recognizing that time for staff training is limited, the training consists of two, two-hour sessions and one or more “booster” sessions to assure that new skills and knowledge are not lost over time. In addition, there are suggestions for additional activities for nursing homes that wish to offer a longer program.
The manual and related work were made possible in part by a grant received from the United Hospital Fund. The United Hospital Fund of New York is a non-profit research and philanthropic organization actively working to shape New York’s health care (www.uhfnyc.org).
