Research Beginning on Alzheimer’s Association Grant
“Racial/Ethnic Minority Senior Housing Residents with Dementia”
The FLTC in partnership with the University of California at Fresno has begun work on the Alzheimer’s Association grant that it was awarded in 2004. The project will be the first senior housing research project for the FLTC. The project will include the housing associations from New York but also California, Florida, Illinois and Massachusetts.
The purpose of the study is to determine how senior-housing entities can best retain minority tenants in the early stages of dementia. The objectives of the funded project are to:
(1) Describe the socio-economic and health/functional status characteristics of African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian senior housing facility residents with dementia in the five states and the services that are associated with aging in place and appropriate transitions to residential care;
(2) Explore how programming in these facilities such as care coordination and supportive services influences the maintenance of independent living for African American, Latino and Asian American populations; and,
(3) Disseminate findings to dementia care specialists and housing managers across the country.
