Title: Mini-Grant in Service Learning

Posted on: 12/30/2005

Opportunity to apply for Mini-Grant in Service Learning

The Foundation for Long Term Care (FLTC) is offering mini-grants for up to five New York State college partners to participate in a joint application to the Federal Corporation for National Service (CNS). The joint application will request funding for intergenerational community service projects with a classroom component. The application responds to a new strategic plan of the CNS: to engage baby boomers in service. Participants in the service learning experience project proposed by the FLTC will be teams of college students and retirees, including those who may be receiving some services themselves.

Mini grants of up to $5000 per semester (Years I and II) and $2500 per semester (Year III) will be awarded if and when the CNS funds the FLTC. Applications to the FLTC are due 2/1/06.

The FLTC will bear all responsibility for preparing the grant proposal. The FLTC is an ideal lead entity for this application because it has been funded twice by the CNS and has won two national awards for its previous projects in service learning in elder care. In addition, the proposed project director prepared for this project by participating in a two-day training program on civic engagement of elders run by the University of Pennsylvania.

Selected colleges will be able to review and offer input into early drafts of the proposal before officially being included in the application.

If funded, the project will start in August 2006. Colleges will:

1) Expand the existing service learning structure at each college to (a) include retirees in the service learning experience and (b) add a focus on service learning in elder care and chronic care. (While each college must have at least one team of retires and students working on elder or chronic care service in the college neighborhood, other service projects may be included.).

2) Participate in required data collections and reporting and twice-yearly development meetings.

This project can be modified to meet the needs of the community surrounding the college and the interests of the faculty members who will lead the service learning class. There is no one “cookie cutter” model.
