Peer Mentoring for Long Term Care Charge Nurses

This project, currently underway, is a New York State Department of Health Dementia Grant with the FLTC subcontracted with the Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Health and Rehabilitation Center.

The FLTC wrote the proposal and will conduct all training for the 10 NYAHSA members of the consortium. Other members are: Daughters of Jacob; Jamaica Hospital Nursing Home; Mohawk Valley Nursing Home; Ellis Center for Long Term Care; Highlands Living Center; Workman’s Circle; Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and St. Cabrini Nursing Home. The FLTC will also manage the grant for the lead entity. The proposal builds upon our award-winning work in peer mentoring of CNAs and will focus on management, leadership and supervision skills of RNs.

The goals of the project are (1) to improve care for residents with dementia by improving the management leadership and communication skills of long-term care charge nurses, especially as they relate to dementia care; and(2) to improve care for residents with dementia by improving retention rates of charge nurses and the CNAs they supervise.

Project objectives are:

  • Improve charge nurse retention rates by 15%.
  • Improve the quality of care on the charge nurses’ units, especially for residents with dementia.
  • Improve skills in developing an effective team approach to dementia care.
  • Support new staff as they make the transition to be part of the facility team.
  • Teach positive “practice wisdom” management which is often overlooked or “under-covered” in existing orientation programs.
